A cycle of epic poems narrated by Ossian, renowned for being 'translated' by James Macpherson, a Scottish writer, poet, literary collector, and politician. In 1761 Macpherson published a work in which he claimed to have discovered an ancient epic poem that he had translated from the original Gaelic. Irish historians immediately debated its authenticity, and over the years were joined by the likes of Samuel Johnson who claimed Macpherson found fragments of poems and stories, which he then manipulated into a romance of his own. Bound in half brown calf with marbled boards. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spotting and age toning.
