A fantastic hnad coloured edition of Hans Holbein the Younger'sThe Dance of Death, a striking series of Renaissance woodblock prints depicting the presence of Death on the everyday lives across various levels of society - from pope to physician to ploughman.Composed by Hans Holbein the Younger between 1523 and 1525, the woodcuts were eventually first collected in book form in 1538 by the Trechsel brothers.A Regency era hand coloured edition engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar, one of the most significant artists from Prague, who first created copies of Holbein's woodcuts on copper plates in 1607.In contemporary full straight grain morocco, with decorative gilt borders and spine.Engraved copper portrait plates of Holbein and Hollar (the engraver), a hand coloured frontispiece, and thirty further hand coloured plates engraved after Holbein's original designs.With descriptions of the prints given in English and French. Preceded by a Life of Holbien.Collated, complete.
