Second printing.' Penguin Lives.' This book was previously owned by the renowned sociologist Daniel Bell. He signed his name on the first front end paper. He also placed parentheses and little squiggly lines of various sorts to the left and right of sentences and paragraphs that he deemed important. So if you want that guidance, his voice so to speak, as you read this very well-regarded book you will find it only in this copy. He took good care of the book. You should be able to see that from the photos. The covers are very clean. There is some crinkling/wrinkling at the spine ends and just adjacent. The cover edges are in excellent shape. The corners are in excellent shape. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The page edges are exceptionally clean. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and endpapers are very clean. All of the pages are very clean. I'm not seeing any soiling. The pages are also quite bright. I'm not finding any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no stamps or markings of such kind. There are no attachments. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. The front cover has a large hole. Actually it's a window, a circular window, a perfect circular window. The jacket has no holes nor tears. It's also very clean. It does have a little crinkling at the top edge of the spine. The flaps are in solid shape, very clean as well. The bottom corner of the rear flap does have a small crease. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'Only R.W.B. Lewis-- the renowned biographer and author of The City of Florence-- could write so insightfully about Dante Alighieri, Florence's famous son. Dante traces the life and complex development-- emotional, artistic, philosophical-- of this supreme poet-historian, from his wanderings through Tuscan hills, and splendid churches to his days as a young soldier fighting for democracy, and to his civic leadership in years of embittered exile from the city that would fiercely reclaim him a century later. Lewis reveals the boy who first encounters the mythic Beatrice, the lyric poet obsessed with love and death, and the grand master of dramatic narrative and allegory, as well as his monumental search for ultimate truth in The Divine Comedy. It is in this masterpiece of self-discovery and redemption that Lewis finds Dante's autobiography-- and the sum of all his shifting passions and epiphanies.'. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 004196
