Beschreibung
Day planner with ink well. Measuring 8" x 10". Leather covered wood base and folding lid embossed with "W.C. Fields" and decorative metal rivet that houses a pad with a page for each day of the year. Inside the lid is a perpetual calendar consisting of a small pocket with laminated cards for the months and days of the week. The bottom of the base has a recessed square that holds the ink well. Very good or better with the pad unattached and the first six sheets (January 1-6) missing, a few scattered stains and wear at the edges. The day planner of comedian W.C. Fields with just over two dozen brief entries in pencil for 1939, a pivotal year that began his late career surge. Entries include dinners and meetings with various notable, such as writers Sinclair Lewis and Hartland Rice; film producers Mack Sennett, Henry Herzbrun, Jesse Lasky, and Lester Cowan; and director (and close friend), A. Edward Sutherland, the husband of Louise Brooks. Also listed are various radio appearance reminders; references to rehearsals and scripts, possibly for his next picture, the classic comedy *My Little Chickadee* with Mae West; and "Dinner @ Masquers" which was a testimonial dinner held in honor of Fields' 40th anniversary in show business, and where humorist Leo Rosten joked that "any man who hates dogs and babies can't be all bad." There are also a few entries for Hattie, his first wife with whom he had a son and never divorced, but continued to support despite difficult relations, which soften around this time due to the birth of his grandchild. The second half of the planner is notably absent any further notation, which we speculates, corresponds with his time filming *My Little Chickadee*. A sparse but interesting window into Fields day-to-day schedule. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 466927
