Dr. Ernest William Gurney Masterman (1867-1943) was president of the Royal Geographical Society, lived for c. 20 years in Damascus and in Jerusalem, where he was surgeon to the English Hospital. He was Honorary Secretary in Palestine for the Palestine Exploration Fund."Masterman was director of the Jewish Mission Hospital, founded by the London Society for Promoting Christianity Among the Jews in 1840, he chaired the last meeting of the Jerusalem Literary and Scientific Society, which took place at his house on 10 November 1913. The Jerusalem Literary and Scientific Society had been founded in 1849 by James Finn, the British Consul in Jerusalem, and his wife Elizabeth Anne Finn (nee McCaul), The Palestine Exploration Fund was its offshoot.
