A most handsome skinny little tome, rebound quite strikingly by the master binder, Patrick Bruno, of Sacramento, California, in 2000. A small book, [27], 142, [17], 48 pp. [1 page labeled Errata]. New full calf binding with blind tooling and gilt lettering on spine reminiscent of a 17th century binding. Internally quite nearly Fine. From an auctioneer's site, the book "comprises a philological and etymological attempt to show that Greek stories of Delphos and Apollo's battle with the Python were derived from Hebrew accounts of Joshua, and that Bacchus and Hercules were based on Moses and Joshua. The volume also contains notions about Noah's arrival in Italy, and the origin of the druids." A laid in note written by the previous owner reads as follows, "Frankfurt edition of Dickinson's esoteric work in which he attempts to show that the Greeks based their story of the Pythian Apollo on Hebrew scriptures. He also discusses the origin of the Druids. As 'Delphi Phoenicizantes' was first published in Oxford in 1655, it is compiled by Madan in 'Oxford Books' in which he quotes Wood who 'positively affirms that this book is substantially a work by Henry Jacob (a fellow of Merton, d. 1652), found among his effects . . . It would seem that Dickinson [a physician and alchemist] took Jacob's MS. and made it his own by changes nad even by references to the Arabic text of Eutychius . . . but it is impossible at present to ascertain the exact truth. The wildness of the main theory (in which Joshua is identified with Apollo, Hercules, and other deities . . . ) is equalled by the etymologies suggested . . . ' (See Madan, Oxford Books, 2274).Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
