One of the most important works on landscape design, with descriptions and views of the gardens of Malmaison, Morfontaine, Ermenonville, Méréville, Saint-Leu, Mousseaus, Brunehaut, Tracy, l'Ermitage du Mont-d'Or, Plessis-Chamant, Raincy, Trianon, le Desert de Monville, Guiscard, Maupertuis, le Roeulx, l'Ermitage a Versailles, Crillon, Betz, le Marais, Lormoy, Prulay, Courteille, Jouy, Bel-Oeil,Rambouillet, and a chapter on four "maisons de campagne". The engravings show the impressive gardens of these various French castles and estates, some depicting staff and other figures present in the daily life of the nobility. The final chapter on garden theory includes engravings with overlays showing what a possible conversion to an English-style garden could look like.
