5 1/4 inches x 7 1/4 in., woodcut design printed on a thin tissue (proof) type paper, with initials in the block:EK [Elisabeth Kappeler ?]. Possibly a design for a student competition in graphic design (The Gewerbeschule, Zurich edition was published in 1921 with a titlepage by Pierre Gauchet).Light, age-related tanning to the paper. From the personal collection of Swiss-born artist and designer, Fred Rentschler, who emigrated to America in the early 1920's, and later taught at the Cleveland [Ohio] School of Art. His collection contained examples of proofs & finished pieces of bookplates, new year's greetings, book illustrations, title-page designs, initial letters, etc. mainly produced by Swiss artists & designers, ca. 1917-22, including a few of his Swiss bookplate designs.
