Papers from a recent workshop, Patient Safety through Intelligent Procedures in Medication, examine the role of human and organizational factors in adverse drug events (ADEs) in hospital settings, and look at the use of information and communication technologies in preventing ADEs. Several EU projects are described in detail. Some specific topics include the impact of commercial electronic medication management systems on error, an ontology-based risk management platform, and the use of data mining and data aggregation in the detection of ADEs. Other topics examined include automatic indexing in a drug information portal, computerized physician order entry, and the PSIP approach to account for human factors in ADEs.
