Beschreibung
A FINE copy of this scarce novel in an even scarcer Very Good, dramatically illustrated, jacket. First published in September 1921 and then issued in this Popular Edition in 1924, this is the first reprint of December 1925. Light brown boards with large black text, square, firm and tight, normal 8vo. novel size. Small neat name in pencil (Kathie Wilson) and '1926' on front free end-paper and clean and bright throughout with no other signs of use. Very faint spotting to fore-edge otherwise FINE. Very Good + clean wrapper with dramatic artwork cover (J. Abbey), just a little ragged to crease ends (less than 10mm) and spine top and darkened to creases; faint finger marks but exceptionally good for over 95 years old. Interestingly, the prolific author published a pre-Bond novel in 1937 entitled: Licensed to Kill. She also had a penchant for diabolic titles such as this one and others such as "Satan Finds", "Devil's Playground" and less threateningly, "The Devil's Carpet". ASSOCIATION: Comes complete with the original 23 June 1926 headed invoice (for nine books) from Bentalls Ltd of Kingston-on-Thames, addressed to Miss K. Wilson, Broomielaw, Streatham, Barnard Castle, Durham. [Followers of recent British politics will no doubt see a connection to the title with an infamous journey undertaken to Barnard Castle for an eye-sight test.] 60% price reduction applied.
