Folio, pp [4], 292, without the inserted title pages for 'A Mediation for Ladie-Daie 1621' and ' A Meditation for Christmas Day. 1622', neither of which are included in the pagination or signature gatherings, but with the other title pages which are included, with the ornate engraved title page facing the title, which includes a portrait of Austin within 11 picture panels depicting subjects of the meditations, bound in contemporary polished calf, sometime neatly rebacked, spine with raised bands and red label, slight fraying at fore edge to a gathering or two standing slightly proud, small faults or marks but generally very clean throughout, a good sound copy overall, FIRST EDITION, one of the finest English collections of prose mediations of the early 17th Century. A couple of the title pages to the parts were evidently added by the printer as an afterthought on single folio leaves, but they are not present in this copy. 'by the early 1620s [Austin] was composing those meditations on the feasts and fasts of the Church that were to be the mainstay of his reputation as a writer. Austin's religious works were published posthumously. by his "deare wife and executrix" Anne under the title Devotionis Augustinianae Flamma, which can be translated as "The Flame of Austin's Devotion," with a punning allusion to St. Augustine, whose name in English was usually rendered "Austin." There was, no doubt, a private sense of affinity with the ancient theologian whose works are often cited in the book. It was successful enough to be reprinted in 1637. The interest of the volume lies in what it tells us about the private devotional habits of a devout gentleman in the 1620s and '30s, a time when there was a strong movement towards a more formalised and decorous manner of worship, encouraged by Lancelot Andrewes and William Laud and their associates.'.
