The publication in 1854 of the first volume of the Dictionnaire raisonné de l? Architecture française was a major event in the publishing world. In all, the ten volumes completed in 1868 contained 5,000 pages and nearly 3,500 woodcuts. Viollet-le-Duc's project was to make available to the public the historical and practical knowledge available on medieval architecture: by identifying the principles which had inspired it, this publication would promote the emergence of a "modern" architecture. ". In order to reach a large readership, he chose a manageable format and opted for the organization of a dictionary rather than that of an encyclopedia. Articles vary in size: Architecture entry is over 300 pp. The historical presentations are based on recent work at the time, history of religious orders, "secularism" of the 13th century, communal freedoms. His knowledge of architecture is based on his experience of construction sites, often influenced by his faith in a medieval constructive logic: monuments come from a project, forms translate structures, nothing is useless. The invention of the ribbed cross, key to the evolution of medieval construction, is explained not only in the article vault, but in the words arc, flying buttress, apparatus, pile, etc. A true monument to the century of history, technology and "progress", the Dictionnaire raisonné was a huge success: during the very lifetime of its author, it had two reissues and one reprint two years after his death; it always serves as a reference.
