Digby Duddlewell is a 14 year old boy who dreams of becoming a secret agent. He realises his dream has a chance of coming true when he takes his neighbours dog, Barney for a long walk. On the walk Barney reveals leads Digby of a field where he witnesses a spaceship landing and learns that Barney is a talking alien shape shifter that is about to welcome his colleague Rover. They embark on an adventure to rescue Barneys and Rovers friend who is being kept captive by the evil Benny Tompson.

They are joined by Agent Steve a Government agent in charge of AV9 who is tracking alien activity.

The recue is not help by the interference of two school bullies who know Digby.
