About the Book : In order to increase the usefulness of this work, so often referred to by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the present edition has been further extended to embrace the principles of the Hindu Law according to the various Schools in force throughout India. Book I., which deals with the Law of Inheritance, has been augmented by the addition of the Succession under the Dayabhaga. Portions have been re-written or discussed and the matter in general re-arranged to include the Sources of the Hindu Law and the works of authority according to the different Schools. The importance of Benami transactions, which form part of the Hindu Law in order to assist in the determination as to what property belongs to a joint family, at least in cases of partition, cannot be overrated, and consequently a separate chapter has been devoted to the subject. About the Author : Sir Raymond West (1832–1912), Indian civil servant and judge, was born 18 September 1832 at Ballyloughrane, Co. Kerry, son of Frederick Henry West, journalist, and his wife Frances, daughter of Richard Raymond of Ballyloughrane. His father neglected his own career, the family finances suffering accordingly, and as a result of this his mother saw to his education and secured him a scholarship to QCG. Deciding to study law, he proved a brilliant student and won three scholarships during the course of his university career. He was also an exhibitioner and won two gold medals before graduating with a first-class degree in 1855. Following graduation he won a scholarship from the King's Inns in Dublin but decided to postpone studying for the bar and instead successfully completed the entrance examination for the Indian civil service. He was one of the second group of applicants to sit for this examination after the reorganisation of the entrance procedure, and in September 1856 arrived in India. Posted to the southern Maratha country, he began his service as a civil officer during the Indian rebellion of 1857 and took part in operations against Sawant rebels, later being awarded the Mutiny Medal. Syed H. R. Abdul Majid (1872–1922),The honorable Moulvi Khan Bahadur Syed Abdul Majid, CIE (1872–1922), also known by his daak naam Kaptan Miah was a Bengali politician, lawyer and entrepreneur. He is notable for pioneering the development in the agricultural and tea industry in British India as well as his contributions to both secular and Islamic education in Sylhet. Abdul Majid kept a beard, as per Islamic custom. His dress sense was quite traditional, typically consisting of a pagri, achkan and pyjamas. Abdul Majid was a lawyer associated with the Sylhet District Bar Association for a few years after graduating before going into politics and agriculture. Abdul Majid was a prominent leader of the Sylhet-Bengal Reunion League founded in 1920, to mobilise public opinion demanding Sylhet and Cachar's incorporation into Bengal. However, during the Surma Valley Muslim Conference of September 1928, Abdul Majid and the Anjuman-e-Islamia later opposed the transfer of Sylhet and Cachar to Bengal and supported Muhammad Bakht Mazumdar's resolution. Professor Johann Georg Bühler (1837–1898) was a scholar of ancient Indian languages and law. Bühler was born to Rev. Johann G. Bühler in Borstel, Hanover, attended grammar school in Hanover, where he mastered Greek and Latin, then university as a student of theology and philosophy at Gottingen, where he studied classical philology, Sanskrit, Zend, Persian, Armenian, and Arabic. In fall 1862 Buhler was appointed assistant at the Göttingen library; he moved there in October.
