A Digest of the Laws of England, Respecting Real Property, By William Cruise, First American Edition, Two Volumes in One, Published by S. Gould, New York, 1808, 558 pp, 255 pp, full original leather, 9.5 x 6 , 8vo. In fair condition. Binding quite worn with moderate scuffing and scratching to surface of boards. Spine desiccated and worn with flaking and peeling, minor loss. Overall tired in appearance. Front joint tender. Garret Dorest Wall (1783-1850) ownership on front pastedown. A C has been scrolled below Wall s name. Wall signed the title as well. More below on the significance of Wall s provenance. Dampness staining to preliminaries into table of contents. Age-staining throughout with areas of moderate foxing. Free of known markings. Binding intact. Please see photos. Garret Dorest Will (1783-1850) was an attorney who commanded a New Jersey regiment in the War of 1812. In 1829 he was elected Governor of New Jersey, but declined to serve! He was U.S. Senator for New Jersey from 1835-1841. Extremely important text on the law of Real-Estate issued for an American audience. This edition seems to be quite scarce and much rarer that s the (five volume??) edition issued in the same year by Alsop, Brannand and Alsop on Broadway in New York. ***** FORN0756 HKVAR1223.
