Ma la metafora è presente in tutta la teologia, in quella antica come in quella che la nega. È l atto immaginativo che precede ogni discorso sul rapporto tra Dio e l uomo. Si tratta dunque di avviare un discorso sul ruolo della metafora nel tentativo umano di dire Dio , misurando da questo punto di vista la differenza tra la Scrittura e la storia della teologia occidentale. The aim of this essay is to show how metaphor and in general any form of linguistic ambiguity has been removed from the thinking of the modern age, in order to create an exact and clear language. But metaphor is in the heart of any theology, whether the one of the ancients or the modern one. It is the imaginative act which come before any speech about the relation between God and man. So it is the right time to think about the role of metaphor in the human attempt to talk about God, considering from this point of view the difference between Scripture and the western theology.
