From the Historical Problems: Studies And Documents Series Number 14 Edited by Professor G.R. Elton. 'This book is an invitation to students of the period to consider this well-known event (or series of events) in English history as it actually happened. Beginning with an assumption that the Dissolution was neither an integral nor an essential part of the English Reformation, the author is convinced that the best way to discover how this great 'resumption' of the material resources of the regular clergy was effected is to pursue the story chronologically and thus rediscover what contemporaries knew was happening at each of several successive stages. An important part of this process consists in watching with the help of a selection of the surviving records - how the Court of Augmentation went to work, not only centrally but in the field. An attempt is made to re-assess the part played by Thomas Cromwell, in both the devising and the carrying out of the Dissolution, and particular attention is paid to the chronological relation between his career and the early stages of the dispersal of the Crown's new resources among the King's subjects. It is in the last sphere that the author points the way to further research on a county, or better still on a regional basis, and stresses the need to view the Dissolution in the context of the mid-Tudor land market as a whole. The book should appeal to a wide range of readers, from those needing merely to catch up with the present state of studies in the field to those about to embark upon enquiries of their own. The author, whose own previous contributions to the subject have drawn largely upon work begun twenty-five years ago in the county of Devon, has first-hand knowledge of the enormous and varied collection of records left behind by the Dissolution and its aftermath, both in the Public Record Office and in local archive repositories; and it is largely from those, mostly unpublished, sources that she has selected the documents which form the second part of the book. Joyce Youings gained her Ph.D from the University of London, and is now Reader in Tudor History at the University of Exeter. She has published several books and articles on the period of the Dissolution, including Devon Monastic Lands, and a chapter on 'The Church' in the Cambridge Agrarian History of England, IV.'
