The book is a small, tall 12mo measuring 3"x5", OCLC 257579910, 140 pp plus 1 unnumbered leaf. Bound in full vellum of the time which is smooth and in good condition. Some normal soiling and a half-moon crack on the front, hand-lettered title to the spine. Interior first free endpaper is missing its top corner and has numerous notes, some of them look to be contemporary, this leaf is also glued down to the inside front cover and has bibliographic notes from its earlier stint as part of the great Mendham Collection.Title page is a bit grubby, small humidity stain at the top fore-edge margin, otherwise clean and unmarked. This is a an early edition of Bossuet s famous and authoritative book on Catholicism and the first -- and quite scarce -- Latin edition. The 1671 first edition -- in French -- was criticized by the religious faculty of the Sorbonne, so Bossuet hastily suppressed that edition, made corrections, and then produced another edition.Edited by Claude Fleury (December 6, 1640, Paris July 14, 1723, Paris a French ecclesiastical historian. his great work, the first of the kind in France, and one for which he had been collecting materials for thirty years was the Histoire ecclésiastique, aimed at scholars and historians.
