Octavo; 5 1/2 in. x 7 3/4 in. x 2 in. (thick), half-title; full-color frontispiece: "Taking no notice of Dan's coaxing" showing Dan & the lion, Numa; design-bordered title-page (initialed: N), printed on semi-gloss paper, in red and black, with a small design of a boy on a jumping horse; dedication page; list of illustrations. [8]pp., pp. 9-[331] + 32 pp., undated catalogue: "S. W. Partridge & Co.'s Catalogue of Popular Illustrated Books." With a full-color frontispiece, and five other plates printed in gray tones, by H. L. Bacon. Dark green cloth with gold blocked titling on spine, with decorations in blue and black and a mounted, color-printed paper illustration label of birch trees and wild flowers; with a mounted, color-printed paper illustration, of Dan & the lion, on the front cover, and with titling and decorations in black and blue. Name in ink on the front free endpaper. The paper spine label shows a chip to the lower corner, scratch to the front paper label, light wear, rubbing to the spine ends, cover corners. The front paste-down shows a very light stain from a missing bookplate, light crack to the front inner hinge, browning to the endpapers, there is scattered brown-spotting to some pages, a few page corners have been formerly turned down. Overall condition is actually, much better than usual for this type of book, which is printed on a paper stock, that can tan and easily become fragile with age. This is quite a rare Yoxall title.
