Small missing section at top corner of front endpaper and some margin foxing of first few pages; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by device on title page and at end. An early English translation of L'Assommoir, first published In French in book form in 1877, by Emile Zola (1840-1902). A novel whose theme is alcoholism and poverty in the working class drinking dens of Paris.
