Beschreibung
Map. Engraving with oxidized original hand color. Image measures 15 x 19.5". This fine antique wine map by Jansson depicts the Duchy of Aiguillon, now a commune of the Lot-et-Garonne department in southwest France. The map identifies important towns, fortifications, rivers, vineyards and villages throughout with beautifully rendered mountains and forests. The Garonne river is prominently featured and it's tributary the Lot river. The map is dedicated to Marie de Vignerot de Pontcourlay. She was the niece of Cardinal Richelieu and became one of the greatest Catholic philanthropists of 17th century France. She gave twenty-two thousand livres to found a mission for instructing the poor, noted on the map. The Lot-et-Garonne region of France is known for its Buzet wines. The map includes three cartouches, including the title cartouche in the top right, all elaborately illustrated with cherubs. In good condition with wear along the centerfold and toning throughout. Dutch text on verso. Jan Jansson was part of an influential family of map publishers from the Netherlands throughout the 17th century and beyond. They were based in Arnhem then in Amsterdam. They were printers, publishers and booksellers. Major publications were under the joint ownership of the Jansson heirs and their printing empire. Although the original color has oxidized, with toning repairs and stains, it is a good example of deluxe coloring. Latin edition. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 298337
