256, 226 p.; 15 cm. Contemporary half calf with marbled paper over boards. Gilt-tooled spine titles. Each title page has a title vignette. The first editions of two short novels by Scottish author Charles MacFarlane (1799-1858). Front fixed endpaper bears bookplate of the Rev. J. Congreve, Overslade. John Congreve opened Overslade private classical school near Rugby, England, by 1854. In the 1860s, George Farncomb Wright became his partner in the school; they dissolved their partnership for "the tuition of young gentlemen" in 1871. In Good+ Condition: rubbed; 1-cm. tear in leather at head of spine; front free endpaper and following blank leaf are detached but present; closed tear across title page of Legend; clean and solid.
