Beschreibung
First Colonial edition of these stories/novellas, published in 1897, one year after the first printing of the true first edition (published simultaneously in June 1896 by Heinemann in the UK and Macmillan in New York). Published in Heinemann's Colonial Library of Popular Fiction, issued for sale in the British Colonies and India, and not to be imported into Europe or the United States of America. First collected in book form - the stories were originally published in the following magazines: Cosmopolis [The Figure in the Carpet], Atlantic Monthly [Glasses], Chapman's Magazine of Fiction [The Way it Came] and the Yellow Book [The Next Time]. ***Very good in brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and rule design to spine. No inscriptions. Offsetting to front and rear free endpapers. Edges of boards slightly rubbed and very slightly marked. Corners of boards slightly bumped, worn and rubbed. Head and tail of spine rubbed. Small nick and fraying to tail of spine. Small split to the outer cloth of rear edge of spine not affecting interior board or hinges. Spine and edges adjoining spine slightly faded. Spine tight. Pages clean. No dustwrapper. ***263 pages. 184 mm x 130 mm. ***Short stories / novellas: The Figure in the Carpet; Glasses; The Next Time; The Way It Came. ***'The Figure in the Carpet': concerns a frustrated literary critic obsessed with discovering an author's writing secret. The fictional narrator of the story explains that all critics have "missed my little point," "the particular thing I've written my books most for," "the thing for the critic to find," "my secret," "like a complex figure in a Persian carpet." It seems like everyone else knows it but him - or do they? ***'Glasses': A beautiful woman sacrifices her eyesight for her chance at marrying. ***'The Next Time': A short story about writing and how quality does not ensure popular success, and vice versa. ***'The Way It Came': A man and a woman who have a lot in common including a mutual friend, but that never seem to be able to meet each other. They at last meet after several years, but with a dark Henry Jamesian twist (like The Turn of The Screw): did they meet before one of them died, or retrospectively? ***An antiquarian first colonial edition of Henry James' collection of short stories, published one year after the first impression of the simultaneous true first edition, and first collected in book-form. Uncommon. Of interest to collectors of Henry James and literary short stories. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 4082
