Scarce. First published 1896. A history of England written for children, beginning with the landing of Caesar in 55BC and ending with the Education Act of 1870. Patriotic but refreshingly critical of contemporary conditions: "History is making still, and English statesmen are still discussing different modes of government, and trying to bring about reforms that are so greatly needed. For there is much wrong and injustice going on in Great Britain yet, and in the British treatment of the natives in lands where Great Britain makes her colonies." Illustrated monochrome with tissue-guarded frontis and chapter headpieces. Red cloth with spine lightly bumped at head and base.
