THIS volume deals with East Anglian Painters who lived largely in Suffolk. Research carried out on the painters who came in the wake of Gainsborough and Constable has revealed men of considerable ability and genius. Together they make a great contribution to English painting. Most of the information gleaned has been derived from the various painters' families and the Ipswich and Woodbridge Libraries. At Ipswich Library I should like to thank Miss Dorothy M. White and her very helpful staff. At Woodbridge Library Miss Redstone (who actually knew the Churchyard family) for her invaluable help. Without the enthusiasm of certain dealers and collectors the book would not have been possible. I should like to render thanks to the numerous Collectors who have shown me their Collections and allowed me to reproduce certain works. Miss P. Butler, Curator at the Ipswich Art Gallery, has kindly endeavoured to make available the splendid Collection of East Anglian paintings under her care in order to maintain exactitude in attribution. Photographers concerned largely with the plates are Commercial Studios of Ipswich and Burville & Pratt of Eastbourne. Both firms have rendered good service, sometimes in the face of considerable difficulties. My thanks also to Mrs. M. Watson who has struggled valiantly to decipher my writing and helped with the checking of the numerous entries in the catalogues and price list. The price list may also serve to assist in making known former ownership. This applies also to the numerous catalogue entries included. Thanks go also to the descendant of George Constable, Mrs. Liardet and also Lieut.-General Liardet, Mr. J. V. Todd (a descendant of Henry G. Todd the Still Life painter), Miss A. Rope, niece of George T. Rope), and the various grandchildren of Thomas Smythe. It is fortunate for posterity that the book was compiled whilst the above people lived, for it is certainly true to say that much of the information included would not otherwise have been available.
