Hand-colored map from Colton's Atlas of the World. Straight line borders. Very good condition, with some pencil markings. It appears that these markings show the routes of B-25 bombing runs from the Philippines to the west and southwest in World War II. An interesting feature of this map is the small inset map of the Island & Strait of Singapore. This demonstrates, around the time of the Second Opium War, the growing importance of Singapore as a trading center of Southeast Asia. Along with the East Indian islands which are largely in Malaysia and Indonesia, this map shows all of the Phillipines, the western tip of Papua New Guinea, and large parts of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.
