An early edition with "This edition issued by the Book Society in association with Jonathan cape Ltd September 1949" on copyright page and no additional printings noted; I believe the true first was done only by Jonathan Cape the same year. There is a stain on the rear endpaper which effects that page only. The jacket is a bit chipped and tatty; all four corners are clipped but with the price of 15s. net still present on front flap. Small scrap of paper affixed to front endpaper. Some mustiness. Memoir of the adventurer and World War II hero.
