Beschreibung
Black cloth binding w/gilt title on spine; xiii, 196pp; fold-out maps; charts; map on front and rear endpapers. This volume was issued as Miscellaneous Publication 12 of the Food Research Institute of Stanford University. The preface states that the book deals with "the development of the frontier economy of the Cape Colony from the middle of the seventeenth to the early part of the nineteenth century. The empirical approach of tracing the various phases of the expansion of the frontier economy through the demand, prices and production of such commodities as sheep's and goat's meat, butter, soap, sheep's tail fat, tallow, and hides fits into the traditional work of the Food Research Institute. Its result is a new and plausible economic explanation of a substantial part of the extraordinary movement of the frontier, including the Great Trek. The commodity approach adds new vistas to the extensive literature on the colonial history of the Cape. The author presents weighty evidence in support of his hypothesis that even the most distant parts of the frontier were closely tied ot the market of the great port of Capetown, and thereby to the military and commercial maritime traffic and the Far Eastern trade of Europe long before the cutting of the isthmus of Suez." Very light discoloration around the edges of the front and rear endpapers, o/w the book is in Near Fine condition. [M]. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000119
