Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Three 1840 Articles on Photography, including Microscopy and History of Photography! All in Comptes Rendus de l'Acadmie des Sciences, Partis, Bachelier, 140; the weekly issue for 16 March 1840, pp 429-482, with the Becquerel on pp 469-471; the history of photography paper on pp 478 (half page entry), and the Lefebvre on pp 478-9 (about one full page). This issue is cleanly extracted from a larger bound volume. This is a fresh and crisp copy. VG condition. "This title is actually quite revealing. Becquerel does not say "to produce photographs." Instead, he says "to reproduce drawings and engravings." In March 1840, photography was still largely conceived as a means of making faithful copies of existing artwork and printed images, not yet as an independent artistic or documentary medium. The paper describes a chromate-based paper that yields a positive image—that is, the lights remain light and the shadows remain dark ("les ombres par des ombres et les clairs par des clairs"), avoiding the reversed tonal values of many earlier photogenic papers." The second article is on the history of photography (a remarkable title given that photography was brand new) and even though just half a page of text it treats the early work of Jean Louis Lassaigne. What I wonder about is whether this may be one of the earliest published papers to use the idea of the "history of photography" as a subject in the title. That would take some work to figure out if this was indeed the first such appearance. In any event, it is definitely extremely early. "In early 1839, French chemist Jean Louis Lassaigne (1800–1859) proposed an independent "direct positive" (or reversal) photographic process. He presented this method at the French Academy of Sciences in April 1839, building upon the early paper photography concepts pioneered by William Henry Fox Talbot."--Library of Congress, "The Daguerreotype Process" The third paper in this issue: Lefebvre, "Sur un appareil destines au dessin des objets microscopiques, au moyen duquel on peut aussi obtenir la representation photographique de ces objets" ("On an Instrument for Drawing Microscopic Objects, Which Can Also Be Used to Obtain Photographic Images of Them.") It is also slightly misleading at first glance, seeming to be about making photomicrographs, though it does not offer up a technical evaluation. It DOES however look into the near-future somewhat by writing about using photography to record micro images rather than hand-drawing observations. It is very forward-looking as far as that goes. It is also definitely a very early work on applying photography to a technical and scientific use. NOTE: I had a hard time with the titles of these papers, as you can see. Perha[s the titles aren't so misleading as I said; perhaps it is me.…
