Profusely illustrated with color drawings, black-and-white photographs, two-color drawings, a portrait photographic frontispiece of the artist Edith Holden, and marble illustrated front and rear endpapers. "In 1906 Edith Holden began a series of notes which, when published in 1977 as The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, captured the imagination of the reading public and became a best-seller around the world. Now, in The Edwardian Lady, Ina Taylor brings together a unique collection of photographs, paintings, and mementos of the Holden family, as well as excerpts from Edith's own lively correspondence and highlights from Country Diary that tell the story of her life and the background against which she developed her talents. In the new and exciting industrial center of Birmingham in the last years of the Victorian age, the remarkable Holden family participated to the fullest in the expanding artistic and cultural life of the city, where William Morris and Walter Crane were contemporaries. From there, Edith journeyed to Scotland to study with the painter Joseph Denovan Adam and to Dartmoor in Devon, where she came closest to the wild life and natural surroundings that played such an important part in her life and work. Finally settling in the Chelsea area of London, she married the sculptor Ernest Smith and continued to paint and illustrate until her tragic death by drowning in 1920. Beautifully illustrated and richly detailed, The Edwardian Lady is the perfect companion volume for all devotees of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady." - from the inner front jacket flap.…

Shopbeschreibung
Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
