First Edition, first printing of 'the first book on transistor electronics' (Origins of Cyberspace 904). Frontispiece, xxiii, 558 pp, 1 leaf (first page of Appendixes, which extend onto the rear pastedown). Original cloth, black ink spine patch (hardly rubbed at all, as it often is), gilt lettering. Signature and bookplate of same former owner (H. B. Frost) on front pastedown, else Very Good+, without dust jacket. William Bradford Shockley: Nobel Prize, Physics, 1956 (shared with John Bardeen and Walter Brattain), 'for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect'. 'In closing this lecture, I would like to refer to a paragraph written in my book in 1950. I am pleased to see that the predictions of the paragraph appear to have been borne out to a considerable extent and I feel that it is now as appicable as it was then: 'It may be appropriate to speculate at this point about the future of transistor electronics. Those who have worked intensively in the field share the author's feeling of great optimism regarding the ultimate potentialities. It appears to most of the workers that an area has been opened up comparable to the entire area of vacuum and gas-discharge electronics. Already several transistor structures have been developed and many others have been explored to the extent of demonstrating their ultimate practicality, and still other ideas have been produced which have yet to be subjected to adequate experimental tests. It seems likely that many inventions unforeseen at present will be made based on the principles of carrier injection, the field effect, the Suhl effect, and the properties of rectifying junctions. It is quite probable that other new physical principles will also be utilized to practical ends as the art develops.' It is my hope to contribute to the fulfilment of the predictions of this paragraph through my new organization in California' (conclusion of Shockley's Nobel Lecture, 'Transistor technology evokes new physics', delivered December 11, 1956). 'The discovery of the first semiconductor amplifier by Bardeen and Brattain in Shockley's department at Bell Labs, but without his participation, drove him to furious activity. Bardeen described the transistor action as minority carrier injection, but there was no clear proof that this was correct. In the process of devising an experimental test of the transistor action, Shockley invented the junction transistor. He reported on this device in a paper in the Bell System Technical Journal and gave a comprehensive review of the electronic behavior of semiconductors in a book in 1950. . . . The publication of Electrons and Holes in Semiconductors by Shockley in 1950 was a bible to a generation of researchers and academicians' (John L. Moll, 'William Bradford Shockley: February 13, 1910 August 12, 1989', Biographical Memoirs, National Academy of Sciences).
