His theory was known as the Brunonian System. His suggested cure was the use of opium or alcohol. This is a later printing of his popular work that was introduced in the late 18th century. Although popular into the 19th century, his theory was eventually debunked. The two names written on the flyleaf were those of related doctors in 19th century Wisconsin. Dr. William Monroe (1818-1908) had an interesting life. He served in the Black Hawk War of 1818 at the age of 14; attended Washburn Institute in Ohio; studied medicine with his step-father; went to California in 1850 and practiced medicine among the miners; returned and was granted a medical license; and was an examining surgeon during the Civil War ? all before getting his degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1869. From then on, he practiced medicine in Monroe, Wisconsin until his semi-retirement in 1902. The other name, N. A. Loofbourow, is that of Dr. Monroe?s younger stepbrother. William Monroe?s mother was widowed from his father and was remarried to Dr. John Loofbourow. Their son, Nathan A. Loofbourow, was born in 1849 and came to Monroe in 1870 to study medicine under Dr. Monroe (his older stepbrother). He graduated from Rush Medical College in 1873 and later took special studies at Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York and more post graduate work at Rush. He also studied in Europe.
