Excerpt from Elements of Useful Knowledge, Vol. 3: Containing a Historical and Geographical Account of the Empires and States in Europe, Asia and Africa, With Their Colonies
Having been long her/flexed with the discordant o/zinions of English authors, no two of whom agree in the orthogra Ithy of words, I have resorted to an investigation of the firimitivc English, as it was written before the Norman conquest, with a view' to ascertain whatis right, and what is wrong, in the English books, and to fix a standard of firoflriety, on original firinci/zles. This examination will enable me to solve the doubts and reconcile the diferences of aninion, which have existed on this subject. This is a jield which no English author has fully eslored and the jtractice of settling controverted [mints by the opinions of this or that writer of distinction, has only multifili ed dis agreements, and increased the embarrassments of the stu dent. If my fillow citizens should aft/trove of my {tar/toss, and continue to afl'ord me the liberal encouragement I have hitherto received, I will endeavor to give them a more uniform, and correct standard of writing than they yet flossess.
