The encyclopaedia was conceived on a new plan aimed at satisfying the needs of two sorts of readers: those wishing to study a subject in depth could turn to the over 40 longer "treatises" ( for example that on Anatomy, which runs to 165 pages), while those in need of quick reference material could find a short alphabetically arranged entry of typically a few lines but sometimes little more than a definition.
