By Francis Liber, Edward Wigglesworth, Thomas Bradford, Thomas Gamaliel, Henry Vethake, Published by Sanborn, Carter & Bazin, 1856, full original leather, 8vo(s). In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing to surface of leather overall. Lacking spine labels on each volume. Blind imprint remains. Affects aesthetic of set, but not integrity. Marbled end papers lightly toned, free of plates or ownership. Internally all are quite good with light toning and minor instances of foxing. Free of known marginalia, a spare mark may be present, but unlikely. Bindings remain tight and intact. Thirteen volumes. A large set that may require additional postage. Please see photos. Francis Lieber (1800-1872) was an educator and political activist, born in Germany. Lieber emigrated to Boston in 1827 where he was approached by Carey Lea and Carey (of Philadelphia). They proposed a number of literary projects that included this Encyclopedia. Lieber modeled to work on Brockhaus Conversations Lexikon with appropriate portions adapted to its American audience.
