First Printing was in 1907. Fine- Condition. No Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square, with faded gilt top-edge, and no markings of any kind. The Binding is full burgundy cloth with author's name in gilt to front board, gilt title, etc., to faded spine, all corners square and still relatively sharp, and the endpapers unmarked except for a very small a very small "Brentano's Booksellers & Stationers" label at the bottom inside of the rear endpaper, probably from 1909. No Dust Jacket, probably as issued. See photos. 400 pages. 5 1/4" x 7 3/8". An Enemy of the People translated from the Norwegian (En Folkefiende, 1882) by Eleanor Marx-Aveling; The Wild Duck translated from the Norwegian (Vildanden, 1884) by Frances E. Archer. Introductions to each of the dramas by William Archer. An Enemy of the People questions whether there are any absolute principles of morality or wisdom. Considered the first modern masterpiece of tragicomedy, The Wild Duck is known for the quote "Deprive the average human being of his life-lie, and you rob him of his happiness, " in tension with the proverb "The truth shall set you free.".
