Size of printed leaf: 7 7/8" x 10 1/4" (Book III.); size of ("The Departure of Ulysses.") engraving: 3 5/8" x 4 1/8". Size of printed [T.F.I.] label: 4 1/8" x 4"; pasted to a slightly larger slip of black paper (this appears to be cut from a larger sheet, where the label & leaf were originally mounted). Back of leaf shows remains of 2 tape mounting tabs on top edge, rubber cement(?) stain across back upper margin; some tanning of edges & scattered brown spots to margins & back of leaf, general wear & rubbing to front margins. (Scan shows the front of this leaf with the label). Engraved line around image, reads: "London, Publish'd July 1, 1790, by C.Taylor No.10 near Castle Street Holborn." From a larger set of leaves, assembled & published by T.F.I. in the 1920's. Text of the printed label: "From an English translation of Fenelon's Telemachus, beautifully illustrated with stipple engravings, an example of which is here shown rather than the indifferent text. Printed by J. Davis for C. Taylor--who seems to have been both a publisher and an engraver--at London, in 1792. This was the heyday of stippling which, because of its pretty effects and easy method of execution, quite eclipsed the more tedious line engraving, and rivalled in popularity the intricate art of the mezzotint. Some of these plates are by W. Nutter, a well-known engraver, the others were done under Taylor's direction. Fenelon has been termed an Eighteenth Century philosopher born out of his time, and there can be no doubt that he foreshadows in his writings many of the Utopian ideals of Rousseau and the Encyclopedistes. Especially is this true of his Telemaque, a political allegory written for his pupil, the Duke of Burgundy. This work enjoyed a widespread popularity in Europe for more than a century: it is now but a literary echo. (C) 1927, T.F.I.". We cannot guarantee that this engraving is from the 1793 printing mentioned in the label, but it is a genuine printed engraving produced in the 1790-1800 period. Sold as an engraved illustration.
