First edition. 8vo. ( 200mm. ) Pp. [3] iv - lxiv, [1] 2 - 135 [6] 142 - 255 [1] . All edges with a red wash. Head and tailpieces. Few 3 and 4 line initials. Title-page a little dusty and spotted, contents occasionaly lightly spotted, p.254 & 255 more so. Few initial upper fore-corners turned. Modern half calf over marbled paper backed boards, the spine with five raised bands, red morocco title label, new headpiece, new endpapers. This is the author's principal collection of verse. Leonard Welsted (1688-1747) was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he never acquired a degree. His first written poem, "Apple-pye" was published in 1713 and is reprinted here, along with his version of Longinus's On the Sublime (1716), which Swift alleged was translated from Boileau's translation. Welsted is now chiefly remembered for his virulent quarrels with Pope, and his long critical essay with which this book begins, in which he opines on taste, wit, genius, and the rules of poetry.
