A nineteenth century reprint of the family letters of James Howell, in the publisher's original cloth binding and edited by Joseph Jacobs. This particular reprint in a copy of 10th edition of the work, originally printed in 1737. James Howell was the Historiographer Royal to the monarch Charles II, who was an important figure of the 17th century. This particular work features a series of letters by the historian. Edited, with annotations and indexed by Joseph Jacobs, the Corresponding member of the Royal Academy of History. Ink inscription to the front endpaper reads 'Kathleen Astbury with love from Jonathan 8/7/55'. The bookplate of 'Roy & Nina Merley' to the front pastedown. The Merleys owned Plaish Hall, Shropshire. This is a stunning Grade I Tudor house, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The home once belonged to Judge William Leighton, who was an amateur poet and sixteenth century composer. The house, as it stands now, was built in two stages for Leighton, who was presiding over a trial of prisoners whilst the home was being completed. Roy and Nina Merley owned the house for thirty-five years and were responsible for reinstating the Tudor style gardens and renovating the house to its former glory. Their bookplate has an image of the house in the background, with a blackbrid eating a worm in the foreground. In the publisher's original cloth binding, gilt lettering to the spine and a small crest to the front board. Externally generally smart. Light bumping to the spine and extremities, with a notable bump to the head of the front board. Light age toning to the extremities of both the front and rear boards. Light age toning to the fore edge, with light spotting. Heavy spotting to the front endpapers, with a previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown, and a ink inscription to the front endpaper. In addition there is a small ex libris stamp to the front of the head of the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with minor age toning to the extremities, and the odd spot. Heavy age toning to the tissue guard to the frontispiece. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 644C7
