xxii + (2) + 333 + (2) pp. 20.5 x 12.5 cm. Hutcheson was born at Drumalig, outside Saintfield, County Down, and educated at Killyleagh and the University of Glasgow. Hutcheson's essay was one of the most important writings on moral philosophy in the early 18th century, widely translated and hugely influential throughout England, continental Europe, and America. It was perhaps most popular among the philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment, having an important influence on David Hume and Adam Smith. First published in 1728, reprinted in 1730, and brought out in 1742 with revisions. In a contemporary blindstamped tooled calf binding, with a new gold-blocked maroon spine label.
