L'abbé de la Ville donne en fait ici sa propre version en français, largement augmentée et remaniée, de l'ouvrage de William Smith intitulé "Brief state of the Province of Pennsylvania" qui vient de paraitre à Londres quelques mois auparavant. Ce récit de l'abbé de la Ville s'avère également une source d'information primordiale sur les activités de Benjamin Franklin durant cette période et surtout sur ses efforts pour obtenir de l'aide pour le général Braddock. Streeter explique que le présent ouvrage fut sans doute publié dans le but d'obtenir le soutien du peuple français dans le combat que mène alors la France contre les anglais dans le nord de l'Amérique, suite à la défaite du général Braddock. Le texte de Smith n'occupe que la partie centrale de l'ouvrage de La Ville et donne un aperçu des atrocités commises par les indiens sur les membres de la colonie en octobre et novembre 1755, en insistant sur l'impuissance des colons anglais à repousser les français et leurs alliés indiens. L'auteur a ajouté une préface dans laquelle il décrit brièvement la géographie et la population de la Pennsylvanie, et a donné une suite au texte original de Smith (?Relation contenant la suite de ce qui s'est passé en Pensilvanie'). Le volume se termine par la traduction d'un acte du 25 novembre 1755 visant à « apporter plus d'ordre & plus de discipline parmi /// S.l., 1756. 8vo [160 x 95 mm] of 128 pp. and a folding map. Contemporary binding. --- Rare first edition of the French translation of this important work, of the utmost interest for the history of Pennsylvania, aiming at wining the support of the French people whereas France is fighting against England in America. The abbot La Ville actually gives here his own version in French, largely augmented and revised, of William Smith's work entitled "Brief state of the Province of Pennsylvania" that was just published in London a few month before. This work by the abbot La Ville turns out also to be an essential source of information about Benjamin Franklin's activities during this time and most of all about his efforts to get help from General Braddock. Streeter explains that this work was indubitably published to gain the support of the French people whereas France is fighting against England in North America, after General Braddock's defeat. Smith's text only deals with the central part of La Ville's work and gives an idea of the atrocities perpetrated by the Indians on the members of the colony in October and November 1755, emphasizing the powerlessness of the English colonists to push back the French and their Indian allies. The author added a preface in which he briefly describes the geography and the population of Pennsylvania, and gave a sequel of Smith's original text (?Relation contenant la suite de ce qui s'est passé en Pensilvanie'). The volume concludes with a French translation of an Act of November 25, 1755, aiming at "imposing order & discipline on the Inhabitants of Pennsylvania".
