Über diesen Titel

Inhaltsangabe:

Throughout history, military commanders have sought to exploit the high ground. Whether to engage in reconnaissance, to facilitate better lines of communication, or simply to provide a better location form which to launch an assault, the high ground is militarily important. Today, the ultimate 'high ground' is space. The impact of space based assets and their ability to perform is now widely accepted. It is now 40 years since the dawn of the space age with the successful launch by the Soviet Union of the Sputnik 1 satellite. Even in 1957 the space programs of both superpowers - the only active space participants at that time - were firmly under the auspices of the military. Today, of course, the situation is rather different, with a multitude of countries involved in civil space activity. Yet the military significance of space is now greater than ever before. Today space is utilized by all the major military powers for a wide range of purposes, including surveillance, reconnaissance, navigation and communications to name but four. The 1990's have thus developed into the decade which, from an operational military perspective, has seen space become Europe's final frontier. This book serves two purposes: While focusing on the specific field of military space activity as a distinct issue area, it also traces the development, growth and re-emergence of the Western European Union (WEU) as a European security organization, all the while placing both of these within the broad framework of European security in general.
