CONDITION: Good Plus; bookplate with a drawing of Charles Bonaparte's house, Bella Vista, erected in 1896, on the fixed front endpaper, and an inscription, presumably from his tutor, on the free endpaper commending his progress in French and dated le 27 Juin, 1860; the back of an old toned pocket on rear endpaper, gilt on boards and spine is bright, spine has been professionally repaired; spine cloth was laid on new green cloth; approximately 1/4" strip of new cloth at the top is visible, 3" split in joint on back, a small white sticker covers a former owner name on endpaper; pages stiff and opens stiffly, pale foxing throughout on pages and especially on margins, not intrusive. Small hardback This book was given to Charles J. Bonaparte, age 9, for his progress in ses études français. With the intent of leading children to think for themselves, Evans gives them a taste of historical reasoning and authentic documents as well as exciting stories: The Battle of Otterbourne; The Wars of Ghent; Philip van Artavelde; Jacqueline of Holland. Bonaparte, from the American branch of the family and thus a great nephew of Emperor Napoleon I, grew up to serve in the Cabinet of President Roosevelt, first as Secretary of the Navy, then as Attorney General.
