Fair to good copy, blue and gilt decorative cloth hardback book. Undated but similar listings suggest 1859 and this to be a 1st edition. A few marks are present on the covers and top and bottom of spine are scuffed and a little torn. Gutters are cracked but binding remains. Small gold address sticker on front end-paper. Pages are lightly tanned with age. No inscriptions, stamps or pen markings inside. Board covers are a little bumped. Please see photos. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers C0537

Gosse was among the most distinguished naturalists in the nineteenth century and published numerous books, especially on marine biology, the sea shore, aquariums, and on his travels in Jamaica, Canada, Alabama, etc. Freeman 86: 'This was one of the most successful of Gosse's books and was a useful and accurate manual for the amateur microscopist. Most of the book is based on original observations and some of it was taken from his previously published papers in serials'. A picture of this book is available on request. Decorative Cloth. Zustand: Fair. Philip Henry Gosse (illustrator). 1st Edition. A fair to good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding with numerous illustrations in the text. Not dated on the title page but with signature to front endpaper dated 1859 and meeting the criteria for the 1st edition. The binding is generally clean with a couple of small marks to the front board. The spine is darkened and there is wear at the front joint with splitting to the cloth at the bottom. Spine ends pulled and spine slightly cocked to front. Small dent at the top of the back board. Bumped corners. Internally there is a blind stamp (bookseller's) to the front endpaper and two signatures, one dated 1859. The front endpaper is splitting at the joint. Contents complete: title, preface dated February 1859, list of illustrations pp xii; text including index pp 1-506. Adverts for Gosse's works 4pp. The contents are in very good clean condition with light toning to margins. Top page corners have been turned over at some point on pp 28-32, and 255-7.
