Exploration of the Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia, The Sources, Supply and Overflow of the Nile, the Country, People, Customs, Etc. Interspersed with Many Highly Exciting Adventures of the Author, by Sir S. W. [Samuel White] Baker. Hartford: O. D. Case, 1868., . Baker (1821-1893) was an English explorer and big game hunter who was governor-general of the Equatorial Nile Basin from 1869-73. He started on his first explorations in Africa in 1861 and became well known for his exploration of the Nile River. He was the first European to reach Albert Nyanza (Lake Albert) in 1864. As a result of his efforts in this and other explorations he became a member of the Royal Geographical Society. The book recounts his explorations, along with big game hunting - elephant, lion, buffalo, and more, accompanied with native sword hunters. Hardcover, original burgundy pebbled cloth, with gilt titles on the spine. 608 pages. Well illustrated, with one folding and one full page map, and 21 illustrations from original sketches made by Baker including a frontispiece. Very good plus condition, a handsome copy. Interesting provenance: The book has the small attractive bookplate of Silvanus J. Macy on the inside front cover. Silvanus Macy was a descendent of the first white settler of Nantucket and was important in the whale oil shipping business. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 001656
