This book examines the possible role of plant melanin-like pigments in protection against environmental pollutants, including heavy metals, pesticides, microplastics and ionizing radiation. Using knowledge of plant stress biology, pigment biochemistry and evidence from radio-tolerant fungi in the Chernobyl environment, it considers whether melanin in plants may be involved in antioxidant defence, metal binding and environmental resilience.
