Worthy of a museum or university library collection. A treatise on the artistic use of colors in the ornamentation of buildings, and a series of designs, illustrating the effects of different combinations of colors in connection with various styles of architecture. Illustrated with twenty chromolithographed plates with letterpress description opposite, plus two plates with fifty paint samples and 20pp of ads in the rear for Devoe & Co products, some with color printing. Color documentation is a most difficult problem facing the owner of a period house who wants to paint it authentically. This volume uses full-page color lithographs in duplicate to demonstrate the effects of different color schemes and how they can be combined successfully. Each paint color on the houses in the color lithographs is keyed by a number to a specific ready-mix paint chip bound in at the rear. The purpose of this book was to make available rare primary documents on nineteenth-century architecture and decoration to which curators, collectors, architects and preservationists could refer. Topics on some of the other titles in the series included works on drapery, architectural ironwork, lighting fixtures, Gothic Revival furniture, plumbing, kitchens and architectural pattern work. A reprint facsimile of this volume was issued in 1975 as the first publication in a new series entitled The Athenaeum Library of Nineteenth Century America.
