"It is impossible to fully understand the use of decoys in waterfowl hunting without considering the important role of factory birds. [In this book] we will attempt to put the role of factory birds in perspective. Market hunters, men who killed waterfowl in large numbers for profit, flourished during the late 19th and early 20th century. Wildfowl .were sold by the barrelful to wholesale food markets in large cities across the country. The advent of the [modern] shotgun brought with it an ope invitation for slaughter. Scores of ducks fell before a single gunner daily, keeping restaurateurs well-stocked and patrons happy. This carnage continued until 1913 when all night shooting, spring shooting, and shipment of birds was outlawed by a federal migratory bird act. Legal market hunting ground to a halt in 1918 when the United States and Canada enacted the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. .Large numbers of decoys were indispensible to the market hunters and the manufacturers of factory decoys met this need by providing good hunting birds at reasonable prices. Hundreds of sporing hunters found these decoys well-suited to their needs, especially those without the talent or inclination for hand-carving their own rig. .althought there were tens of smlal'factories' over the years, we've limited this book to our four favourites, Mason, Stevens, Dodge, and Peterson. Chronologically, the order is reversed. It's difficult to give exact dates for their inception because they're not known, but they did span the period from 1873 to 1924." Chapters include: Mason Decoy Factory - history and catalogue; Masons for the beginning collector; Mason special orders and rarities; Stevens Decoy Factory; Peterson and Dodge Decoy Factories; Decoys as an investment; Drawings - finer points to look for in Mason Decoys. Decoy species illustrated and discussed include: Black Duck, Blue Bill, Brant, Goose and Swan, Bufflehead (Butterball), Canvas Back, Coot and Scoter, Goldeneye (Whistler), Mallard, Merganser, Old Squaw, Pintail, Red Head, Teal - blue wing and green wing, Widgeon, Wood Duck, Shorebirds. Reseña del editor: Factory-made bird decoys by Mason, Stevens, Dodge, and Peterson are covered extensively, featuring only the finest examples by each maker in this beautifully illustrated book. Color photographs of over two hundred decoys, plus many black and white photographs and line drawings, make this an invaluable guide in identifying and authenticating factory birds. Included are short historics of each maker. Mason collectors will especially enjoy the chapters on the different species and the special-order models, while a chapter for the new collector is devoted to the characteristics of the different grades of Masons and how to distinguish them.
