The Cambridge-educated English cleric Henry William Pullen (1836-1909) had this allegory on the Franco-Prussian War and England's neutral stance, in which schoolboys represent the major European powers and the real war is imagined as a playground dispute, published anonymously on the 21st of October 1870 William [William I], the German boy with his sly friend Mark [Bismarck], Louis [Napoleon III], the French boy, and John [Bull or Russell], the English boy.
