Anderson's 1912 publication set out to establish the numerical strength of the southern-born soldiers who fought in the Union Armies, concluding that the total was abut 634,000, consisting of white soldiers living in the South, colored soldiers, and men living in the North who were born in the South. The unique feature of the book was the way in which the author cited virtually every battle and listed with each citation the names of the "southern federals" who were involved.
